Reels are the one format Instagram actively shows to people who don't follow you — which makes the craft worth learning.
The first one to three seconds decide whether someone keeps watching. Start with the result, the question, or the most interesting frame — never with a logo or a slow build-up.
Plenty of people watch with the sound muted. On-screen text and captions carry the message either way, and clean vertical framing keeps it readable on every phone.
A Reel should be exactly as long as its idea. Trimming dead seconds does more for watch time than any effect, because viewers who finish — or rewatch — are the strongest signal a Reel can earn.
Beyond those three, the details that consistently help are unglamorous: shoot in good light at the full 9:16 frame, keep text inside the safe margins so buttons don't cover it, post original footage rather than recycled clips with watermarks, and show up on a schedule you can keep. Consistency gives every Reel after the first a warmer start.
We've written up the full process — from idea to publish — in how to create better Reels, and the technical specs live in the size and dimensions guide. If your goal is the profile itself rather than individual videos, start with followers.
Only your public Instagram username. Enter it above and the next page shows the view options available for your Reels — no password, no account access.
The options page shows what's available and which Reels you can select. Public Reels on your profile are what's visible to work with.
Instagram counts views when people watch your Reel, and its insights break down plays, watch time, and where viewers came from. The exact counting rules are Instagram's, and they've changed over time.
Reels are Instagram's main recommendation format: they're shown in the Reels tab and Explore to people who don't follow you, based on what those viewers tend to watch. That's what makes them different from regular posts.
